What Is Periodontal Disease?

Periodontal or gum disease is a bacterial infection affecting the gums and bone supporting your teeth. It typically progresses in stages, from mild gingivitis to more severe periodontitis, which can lead to tooth loss if left untreated. Common symptoms include red, swollen gums, bleeding while brushing or flossing, persistent bad breath, and gum recession.

Diagnosis of Periodontal Diseases

At Kelly Family Dentistry, our team employs state-of-the-art periodontal disease diagnosis techniques to detect and assess the severity of gum disease:

  • Comprehensive Oral Examination: We check for inflammation, gum recession, and pocket formation around your teeth.
  • Digital X-rays: Advanced imaging helps us detect bone loss and assess the overall health of your supporting structures.
  • Periodontal Probing: We measure the depth of the gum pockets to determine the extent of gum detachment.
  • Bacterial Analysis: In some cases, we may conduct microbial testing to identify specific bacteria contributing to the infection.

A periodontal probe (small dental instrument) is gently used to measure the sulcus (pocket or space) between the tooth and the gums. The depth of a healthy sulcus measures three millimeters or less and does not bleed. The periodontal probe helps indicate if pockets are deeper than three millimeters. As periodontal disease progresses, the pockets usually get deeper.
A dentist or a hygienist will use pocket depths, amount of bleeding, inflammation, tooth mobility, etc., to make a periodontal disease diagnosis that will fall into one of the categories below:

  1. Gingivitis
Gingivitis is the first stage of periodontal disease. Plaque and its toxin by-products irritate the gums, making them tender, inflamed, and likely to bleed.
  2. Periodontitis
Plaque hardens into calculus (tartar). As calculus and plaque build up, the gums recede from the teeth. Deeper pockets form between the gums and teeth, filling with bacteria and pus. The gums become very irritated, inflamed, and bleed easily. This may be accompanied by slight to moderate bone loss.
  3. Advanced Periodontitis
The teeth lose more support as the gums, bone, and periodontal ligament are destroyed. Unless treated, the affected teeth will become very loose and may be lost. Generalized moderate to severe bone loss may be present.

Personalized Treatment Plans Once diagnosed, we create a customized treatment plan tailored to your needs. Our treatment options include:

  • Professional Deep Cleaning (Scaling and Root Planing): Removes plaque and tartar buildup beneath the gum line.
  • Antibacterial Therapy: Prescription mouthwashes and localized antibiotics to reduce bacterial infection.
  • Gum Surgery (if needed): In advanced cases, pocket reduction or tissue grafting may be necessary to restore gum health.
